If you’ve walked through Franklin UMC, or even driven by, you’ve probably noticed the hum of activity and the smell of drywall and fresh paint. Construction continues and our new main-level Community Closet space is coming together. Even with finishing touches still ahead (trim painting, minor electrical work, and the installation of new lighting), the space is now fully usable.
Thanks to the hard work of volunteers and staff, all totes (primarily kids clothing) have been officially moved into the new multi-use room on the main floor of the church. The majority of the adult clothing has been hung on racks for easier browsing. These are huge steps forward. All of the Closet’s in-season-inventory is located on the main-level, making shopping easier and more accessible for families, neighbors, and anyone who visits.
When the Community Closet is open, clothing racks and all hanging items will be rolled out from the multi-use room into the Community Room (vestry). This setup keeps the Community Room flexible throughout the week while allowing us to create a welcoming, organized shopping experience whenever the Closet is operating. With everything close at hand, volunteers can setup quickly, and guests can browse comfortably without navigating any stairs or tight hallways. While we’re still experimenting, here’s what it looked like this past Tuesday!
As we settle into this space, we’re ready to restock–and we need your help. The Community Closet is currently in need of clothing donations in all sizes, from children through adults. Men’s and women’s clothing are both welcome. We do not take undergarments, socks, or swimsuits unless they are brand new and in their original package.
Donations must be dropped off inside the building. The building is unlocked Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings, 9a-12p. It is also open during the Closet’s regular operating hours, Tuesdays from 12-2p.
The Closet is based on the principle that there is more than enough to go around when we share with one another. All clothing is offered free of charge. It doesn’t matter what you need. it doesn’t what your style is. You’re always welcome to come, browse and find new-to-you clothes and make a connection in the community.
