Book Discussion // Who Do We Choose to Be? (The Arrow of Time)

Join us in dialogue and discussion, Wednesday at 7 pm EST, as we look at Chapter 1, “The Arrow of Time,” from Who Do We Choose to Be? Facing Reality, Claiming Leadership, Restoring Sanity (Oakland, CA: Berrett-Koehler, 2023) by Margaret J. Wheatley.

The dialogue and discussion will happen in person virtually using Google Meet. To join, go to https://meet.google.com/txp-ndfa-ivu, or call 1-440-467-1448‬, the PIN is ‪220 679 745‬#.

The discussion guide, prepared by Pastor Jacob, for this week’s gathering, can be found below.

In this chapter, Wheatley references two additional essays and articles in the footnotes which make for good additional reading. You can find .pdf’s of those articles here:

“Freeing Ourselves from the Addiction to Hope”
by Margaret J. Wheatley (2021)

“The Fate of Empires and Search for Survival”
by Sir John Glubb (1977)

Pastor Jacob thinks you might also want to listen to “Watch It Fall” by Billy Strings. The song suggests we are living in collapse just as Wheatley suggests, “won’t you watch it fall with me”?

This dialogue and discussion is not a Bible Study, nor is the book explicitly Christian. Wheatley is writing to anyone looking to make a positive impact in the world around them. She challenges all of us to face reality, claim leadership (our sense of authority), and restore sanity in a world that is too often chaotic. All are welcome to participate.

You do not have to own a copy of the book to participate in the conversation, but it is recommended. We are reading the second edition of the text published in 2023.

If you’d like to hear a Christian perspective on these themes, Pastor Jacob is preaching through the book on Sunday mornings. You can find his reflections on “The Arrow of Time” and Romans 13:8-14.
