Virtual Choir

Sing to the Lord a new song!
Sing to the Lord, all the earth!
Sing to the Lord! Bless his name!
Share the news of his saving work every single day!

Psalm 96:1-2, Common English Bible

Singing together is an important part of our worship together. During the COVID-19 pandemic we are ceasing all in-person singing; however, that does not mean we are unable to join our voices in song.

You’re invited to join in the singing of the hymns for worship by joining our virtual choir. Everyone is invited to join their voice with others and “sing to the Lord a new song!” in a new way together. The virtual choir will allow us to join voices with people wherever they may be. Virtual choir videos will be shown as part of our worship together. Virtual worshipers will be invited to sing with the choir from home. Virtual choir videos may be posted to the church website, and social media, and shared in other ways that may encourage people in their faith journey.

Below you will find all the instructions and resources you need to join your voice to our virtual choir. If you have any questions, please email [email protected].

NOTE: Musicians are invited to add their contributions to the virtual choir too! All that is asked is that you play along (in the same key and time) with the accompaniment track/video. If you would like the full accompaniment sheet music (and not just the lead sheet), please email [email protected]. The recording instructions for vocalists will work for musicians.

Recording Instructions

You will need two devices: one device with headphones to watch/listen to the accompaniment track and another device to record yourself singing. You may find it easiest to record with a smart phone. Please record in a quiet environment. Your video submission should be you singing–no accompaniment music, and as little background noise as possible. While it is not an absolute essential, an external microphone for your computer or phone will improve your audio quality.

NOTE: You may be able to use a single computer, a pair of headphones, and two windows open (the accompaniment video and your computer’s camera). You will need to run a test to see if your computer can do this. Remember, we only want to hear your voice on the video (no accompaniment track).

STEP 1
Familiarize yourself with the music and listen to the accompaniment track/video. Practice singing to the track/video before recording yourself.

STEP 2
Find a place to set your recording device. Point the camera for where your face is clearly visible and fills the screen. If using a phone, make sure it is in horizontal/landscape orientation (not vertical/portrait orientation). Also make sure the room is bright so that we can clearly see you and your face.

STEP 3
When you are ready, setup a second device to play the accompaniment track/video. Note: You may be able to use a single computer for this; however, using two devices may be easiest. You should play the accompaniment track through your headphones. Please do not submit videos with the accompaniment track in the background. All we want to hear is your voice (or instrument).

STEP 4
Hit record on your device, then play on the device you will be listening to the accompaniment track/video on.

STEP 5
Sing!!! Retakes are fine, but don’t spend too much time on this! Pick your best one and be done.

STEP 6
If possible, name your video in the following way [YourName_HYMNBOOK ABBREVIATION&HYMN NUMBER]. Example: MaxMadison_UMH95. If you can’t figure it out, do not worry about it.

STEP 7
Send us the recording of you singing! You can send it to us 1) by clicking the “Upload Video” button at the bottom of this page. You will be directed to a Google Form that will allow you to upload your video); or 2) email the video to [email protected]. Make sure to include your name and the name of the song in your email.
